Caledonian Road Student Tower Height Cut

Steven George & Partners has revised down their plans for student housing on Caledonian Road following concerns about the height of the planned development at Mallet and Porter House.
Reduced now to just over 30 metres from 46 metres and from 15 storeys to 11, much of the gateway presence that the development was originally to exclude in relation to the nearby Caledonian Road station is now gone as it will no longer be visible.
The London mayor's office had previously slated the scheme for its bulk of which was deemed completely unacceptable although by bulk what was really meant was height as this is the main change. With this height reduction the dramatic roofline has been dumbed down and no longer has a tower element shooting up, instead gradual stepped heights are employed.
The end result is now a squat couple of blocks that lack the prior vertical styling although the aesthetic theme the buildings showed previously remain the same. These have been replaced by horizontal patterns on the cladding with bands of windows between the buildings panels.
The irony is that despite these radical changes to the back of the building, the plans are still not supported in this specific area by the Mayor of London and will need a further revision to improve the facades now the bulk of the building has become acceptable.
Other modifications to the plans include a new roof terrace planned for the fifth floor of the building and as before the listed frontage on part of the site will remain. There will also be bat boxes in the central courtyard. These are not miniature headquarters for Batman and Robin to make out in but rather to encourage the habitation of bats on the site.
