Formation Architects Embrace The Vertical

Vertical lines are definitely back if this newly planned skyscraper by Formation Architects for the City of London's eastern fringe gets the go-ahead.
Standing on 15-17 Leman Street to the immediate south-east of the new urban park on Aldgate, the scheme has been developed by Pinehill Capital and consists of a 23 storey hotel with all the usual services including a bar and restaurant.
Previously submitted as 26 storeys and 317 bedrooms, the design was amended in March 2009 to 22 storeys and 272 bedrooms but this time around gets a slight boost to 23 storeys although the number of bedrooms further decreases to 251.
The design of the building is that of a slim-line tower with rounded curves to soften its profile. It's fully glazed, including the service core which is concealed behind glass.
The strong vertical lines of much of the southern facade plus a transparently glazed staircase running up one corner of the building adding to the feeling of height that is further supplemented by the glazed lifts that overlook Leman Street.
The northern façade is stepped with glazed horizontal bands breaking up the vertical appearance slightly although it is only stepped vertically so the soar of the building remains.
Despite the slender appearance of the tower that manages to look taller than it is in isolation, it will form part of a dense cluster of buildings in the area and be dominated by both the height and bulk of Aldgate Union which will make it look like a little sister next to a fat overweight brother.
Along with the other planned and under construction buildings in the area, this will contribute towards it becoming one of the densest parts of London for high-rise towers with a total of seven literally next door to each other on a small strip of land 300 metres long and barely 100 metres wide.
